New Novel Series “Hope Springs” Exposes Flaws in American Healthcare Through Compelling Rural Stories

ST GEORGE, UT April 16, 2025

Dr. James Damos, acclaimed author of Hey Doc: Memoirs of a Rural Family Physician (WiDo Publishing, 2019), is thrilled to announce the launch of his latest project, “Hope Springs: A Small Town’s Fight for Community-Driven Healthcare,” the first book in an inspiring new series.

Created in collaboration with the Primary Care Innovators Network (PCIN), this novel blends heartwarming medical narratives with a powerful critique of America’s for-profit healthcare system, spotlighting the critical role of primary care in rural communities.

Set in the fictional Minnesota town of Hope Springs, the series weaves true-to-life medical stories with fictional characters to create a captivating narrative that both entertains and educates. Hope Springs exposes the weakening foundation of primary care in the U.S., where profit-driven models have left rural areas underserved and patients dissatisfied. Through engaging tales of dedicated physicians, resilient patients, and a tight-knit community, the book champions the value of a trusted primary care physician and a “medical home” that prioritizes people over profits.

“American healthcare has become a for-profit industry, and rural communities are bearing the brunt,” said Dr. Damos. “With Hope Springs, we aim to tell compelling stories that highlight systemic flaws while showing how community-driven healthcare can transform lives. This is just the beginning of a series published with WiDo and E.L. Marker that will inspire change.”

The book is a collaborative effort by four members of the PCIN, with Dr. Damos drawing on his decades of experience to craft authentic medical narratives based on real cases.  Co-author Laurence Bauer, MSW, MEd, CEO Emeritus of the Family Medicine Education Consortium (FMEC) and a leader in primary care innovation, contributed poignant diary entries that offer an intimate look at the challenges faced by rural family medicine residents. Additional PCIN colleagues enriched the story with their own insights, creating a vivid tapestry of rural healthcare struggles and triumphs.

“Writing ‘Hope Springs’ has been a labor of love,” Dr. Damos added. “My career has been dedicated to supporting rural communities, and this talented team shares that mission. We’re already planning a sequel that will dive deeper into our fictional town’s journey to build a healthcare mecca, with even more exciting stories to tell.”

The Hope Springs series promises to resonate with readers who crave meaningful storytelling and a call to action for healthcare reform. By blending medical drama, personal resilience, and community spirit, the book positions Hope Springs as a beacon of hope for reimagining primary care in America.  “I’ve informed my colleagues on this project that if anyone can bring our vision to life, it’s WiDo Publishing,” states Dr. Damos.
