And that’s a wrap! Screenwriter-turned-author Scott Keen is wrapping up his Scar of the Downers series with the third and final installment.
Though originally conceived as one book, the story expanded until it filled three fantastic volumes that are now coming to a head.
“It is the same ending as when I wrote the first draft over ten years ago.” Keen explained. “There were hints in the previous two books. The clues are there. I just hope it’s as satisfying to the reader as it was to me.”
Although he had the ending in mind from the very beginning, Keen discloses that certain parts of bringing his tale to its fruition were tricky.
“The most difficult part was ensuring storylines weren’t left dangling,” Keen explains. “I didn’t want the reader to say, ‘Oh wait, whatever happened to this plot?’ And sometimes as I wrote, a character’s history needed to change from what was in my head. So I’m currently re-reading the first two books to make sure everything is taken care of.”
And while Scott is saying goodbye to this project and looking toward others, he feels that these characters and their story will never leave him. “This series is part of me. Thirteen years of my life was dedicated to this story, but now it’s coming to an end,” Keen said, “It’s bittersweet. I’ve never experienced something this massive.”

Like the characters in his books, Scott looks forward to a bright future. He inspires children by connecting with them at events hosted by his local PBS station. He also engages his community by holding book events and readings.
Now that his work with the Downers is finished, Keen is ready to publish another book that takes place in our own world. And still other books are brewing that he will begin soon.
